Funeral of Gilbert Merritt
The funeral services of Mr. Gilbert Merritt formerly of Washingtonville, latterly of this place, was held at the Presbyterian Church at Bethlehem on Monday the 5th Inst. Five sons and their wives, one daughter and her husband assembled to mourn with the widow in her bereavement. A goodly number of sympathizing friends were also present. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Baumont of the Presbyterian Church adn Rev. Mr. Gorse of the Methodist. The deceased was 65 years of age and during a painful and lingering illness he has given repeated assurances of his readiness and willingness to depart, frequently expressing himself that death to him would be a happy release

The seventy-eigth birthday of Mrs. Gilbert Merritt was celebrated at the house of her son, Seneca Merritt, Vails Gale, July 9th. Forty of her decendants were present, comprising children, grand-children and great-grand children. A fine collation was served. When al lwere seated to partake of the good things, Rev. H.C. Masten presented her with a purse in behalf of the friends present which greatly affected the old lady. Singing and a general good time filled up the interval, when we all dispersed, feeling we had a good gathering. By One Present (no name)
