Seneca W. Merritt son of Gilbert and Fanny Eighmey was an active citizen and contractor for some time in the New Windsor & Vails Gate area. What I know of his story is absolutely fascinating. At one time he had amassed a small fortune but lost it in a series of bad investmestments and just plain bad luck. He went to Jamaica island in an attempt to recoop his fortune by directing the construction of a new railroad.  He died there during a blasting expedition.  Though he is not my direct ancestor I am interested collecting all of  the information I can on him.

The house was built by James Edmonston and his wife who came to America from Tyron County Ireland in 1720 and settled in NW in 1727.  At that time it was said that they were the only white settlers between New Windsor and what is now Washingtonville NY. The home was later used by the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.  Seneca W. Merritt lived in this home for a period, during which he was very active in local construction and development.
