Newburgh Journal Wed Nov 26, 1879
cornwall correspondent-
Mr Irvin Merritt is very sick- not expected to live. His malady is hasty consumption. His family have our sympathies in their severe affliction.

It is with regret and sorrow that we have to announce the death of Mr. Irvin Merritt at the 12 o'clock of Tuesday November 25th. He has long been a sufferer. He leaves a wife and ten children, besides many relatives and friends to lament his loss. the funeral will take place at his residence on West Point Road, on Friday afternoon, at half past one o'clock at the house and from the M.E. church at 2 o'clock. When death enters a large family it is seldom satisfied with one victim. It is but four months since Gilbert Merritt, a brother of Irvin's died, his demise occurring on July 23rd last.

Obituary Newburgh Journal
The recent death of Mr. Irvin Merritt has cast a gloom over a large circle of friends and relatives in and about Cornwall. Irvin W. Merritt was born in Durham, Green County, on Jan 18, 1837 where he lived the first 18 years of his life as a farmer boy. In 1855 he moved into Orange County and has followed the occupation of farmer and Contractor ever since that time, and has succeded in acquiring some property. For a little more than a year he ahs had the management of Houghton Farm (at Mountainville and Woodbury), the fine and beautiful estate of Valentine, Esq., one of the most liberal friends of agriculture and the town of Cornwall. From this responsible situation Mr. Merritt returned to his home in Cornwall about the middle of October, his health completely broken up (a few words not readable) and died as we announced in last weeks issue of cancer in the stomach. He was married Dec 8th, 1858, and always sustained his rapidly increasing family above want, leaving at his death a wife and ten children, the youngest about 2 months old. He was the second of eight sons and one daughter. Two of his brothers, younger than himself preceeded him to the tomb. He lost his father 7 1/2 years ago. His aged mother is still living. Mr. Merritt at the time of his death, and for some years previous was a member of the Cornwall M.E. Church. May the widow and her orphan children find consolation in this, that he died as the righteous died and he led to that hope and faith which will prepare them all to meet him in haven.
