Seneca son of Cornbury Merritt and his wife Jane Snyder of Cairo Green County NY
and their associated kin

Those these are only lateral relatives of my Orange County  line,  there was considerable contact between the Merritt families of Greene county and my  branch which  had moved to Orange in the 1850's.  For this reason James U.S. Grant Merritt  and my Grandfather Emmett P. Merritt his son,  were able to collect photos and information on these families when they visited Greene county  in the early 1920's and 30's

This home became the "Catskill Stock Farm" (as it was called in this photo taken May 10, 1936).  Later it was called the Shapanack Hotel.

Photo taken by Seneca Bullock.

Individuals in the photo were identified for Emmett P. Merritt when he visited Elsie Merritt Foster who had attended the reunion together with her father John Wesley Merritt.  Also some names were obtained by visiting Edith Merritt, the grand- daughter of Seneca and Jane Snyder Merritt by way of their son Millard Merritt. It was Edith who remembered that the reunion had been held on July 4th.  In trying to determine the year of the photo, one could surmise that most likely it was held in 1885 or 1886 judging from the age of the baby Hazel Hewitt (great grand daughter of Seneca and Jane Snyder Merritt).

I have some more photos of Seneca and Jane Snyder and their kin, I will put them online as soon as possible, space permitting.  If someone is interested in this family please feel free to contact me at Kelita@rocketmail.com
